Cold Pursuit
by Nancy Mehl
July 17 – August 4, 2023 Virtual Book Tour
Ex-FBI profiler River Ryland still suffers from PTSD after a case went horribly wrong. Needing a fresh start, she moves to St. Louis to be near her ailing mother and opens a private investigation firm with her friend and former FBI partner, Tony St. Clair. They’re soon approached by a grieving mother who wants them to find out what happened to her teenaged son, who disappeared four years ago. River knows there’s almost no hope the boy is still alive, but his mother needs closure, and River and Tony need a case, no matter how cold it might be.
But as they follow the boy’s trail, which gets more complicated at every turn, they find themselves in the path of a murderer determined to punish anyone who gets in his way. As River and Tony race to stop him before he kills again, an even more dangerous threat emerges, stirring up the past that haunts River and plotting an end to her future.

My Thoughts:
From the very first few pages, I felt a chill set in my spine that I couldn’t quite shake. It didn’t ease until I had all of the answers. The twists are perfectly timed and precisely placed to up the ante with each one.
The opening scenes are riveting – so much so that I actually cancelled running my errands for the day because I knew I wasn’t going to be able to stop reading until I learned of River’s fate. I honestly felt every bit of agony, torture, and pain that she was going through with Mehl’s vivid description. The PTSD she faces is completely understandable and although hinders her in many ways, it enhances her in others. Such a complicated matter!
I love the lesson that Mehl gives us with the difference in character attributes between River and her partner, Tony. Tony’s faith and reliance on hope, faith, and prayers is something I would hope to tightly hold onto if I were ever in their shoes. River is apprehensive, struggling with her situation, instead of handing the fret and worry to God.
With good intentions, they hope to each find healing in working together through a new venture of private investigation. I believe that they were truly designed for the job, with their first case pulling them into a web of darkness, threatening to collide the past with the present. It’s a true testament to the depth of their character. I felt on edge with the case and the danger imposed upon the duo. I learned a lot about Synesthesia and was reminded of an old Criminal Minds episode. I had found that quite intriguing, so it was interesting to read and learn more in detail about the condition through this book.
As this is a series, I hope to indulge in future cases that give me the chills with a feeling of hope that things have a way of working out!
