Rule number one of bro-code: exes, sisters—and of course, wives—are off-limits.

Don’t think about them and sure as hell don’t kiss them.

But what if your best friend dies, and suddenly you want the woman who has always been his?

Four years ago my childhood friend lost his life serving our country, and Astrid and her kids became my responsibility.

But before I knew it, something started to shift between us.

Her smile started to make my stomach twist. Our conversations gave me something to look forward to. And working with her made me appreciate just how strong she truly was.

But then one night, I did the one thing I shouldn’t have but couldn’t fight any longer—I kissed her.

She pushed me away, told me it was a mistake, and begged me to forget it ever happened.

And then she shoved me deep and fully into the friendzone, where I’ve resided since then.

Until one instance changes everything and I know for certain she’s the woman I want.

Just when I think we’re on the same page, a secret from our past threatens to destroy our future.

I shouldn’t want my best friend’s widow.

I shouldn’t care what other people think.

But in the end, the only thing that matters is being someone Astrid deserves, and I’ll stop at nothing until she believes that too.

Astrid and Penn are absolute PERFECTION! This book is full of emotions that are breathtaking, heartbreaking, and incredibly beautiful.

As soon as I started the book, my heart opened for Astrid. She was doing what all amazing women do — be EVERYTHING for everyone — especially her husband and kids. Her dreams and goals were belittled, yet she held onto a small piece of them that eventually turns into her purchasing the local bakery. I love that she makes it her own, turning dreams into a reality, despite the guilt she’d been tricked into feeling about baking from her husband. She has a wonderful support system from Penn, her mother, and friends, consistently showing how beautiful of a heart she has. Astrid is an incredible mother — superhero level, in my opinion. She manages to always put her kids on the forefront and ultimately, doesn’t completely lose her personal self in the process. That’s an incredible feat!

Move over book boyfriends — Penn is taking your place! This man is full of kindness, helpfulness, and patience. Seriously. Patience of a saint!! But once he gets a kick in the rear, I love how he becomes a man who isn’t going to stop until Astrid knows exactly what he wants, how he wants it, and the why. His own personal journey hits hard as he, too, is trying to be everything to everyone without letting any of them down. His hesitation to confess his feelings to Astrid is understandable, but once he learns more about his father and the past, we get a front row seat to the beautiful alignment that happens. We see a man become more confident in saying and going for what he wants.

These two left me feeling like I was floating on cloud nine! I loved getting a peek at their future and it was EVERYTHING!! They deserved every ounce of happiness and joy that could be thrown at them. Excited for Sometimes You Fall next!

About the Author | Harlow James

Harlow James is a pen name I use to protect my identity as a high school teacher. Keeping those two roles in my life separate is necessary, but also fun! It’s like a live two lives, and anonymity gives me the opportunity to be bold and take risks in my stories.

I stumbled upon romance novels in 2018 when I picked up Driven by Kristy Bromberg, and I was obsessed. I had just lost my grandmother too, so reading offered me an escape from reality and a chance to grieve on my own terms.

About a year later, I got an idea for my own book and started writing. I researched self-publishing and jumped in with both feet. I had no idea what I was doing!

But now I’ve built a business and hobby that I LOVE! I have an outlet that’s just for me. When I write, I’m not a mom, a wife, or a teacher…I’m a woman who gets to tell stories that no one else can.

My books are the perfect blend of heartwarming moments, full-bellied laughs, and PLENTY of steam to melt your Kindles 😉 And there are always elements of me sprinkled in to every character and story that I write.

When I’m not writing you can find me reading or spending time in my kitchen. I love to cook and feed my family and friends. Otherwise, you can find me watching comedy specials with my husband, camping with our kids, or taking naps. I live for naps 😉
