Trust doesn’t come easily when you’ve been running for as long as I have, which is why moving in with a man I barely know is such a bad idea.

Shepard Colson is all golden-boy charm and devastating good looks. But I know what it’s like to be taken in by easy smiles and the promise of forever—I have the scars to prove it.

Only the handsome contractor won’t stop coming by the bakery and prying little truths from my lips—those amber eyes of his seeing far too much. And when all the secrets come crashing down, he’s determined to keep me safe, even if it means moving into my rundown cabin to do it.

Now, Shep isn’t just rebuilding the walls of my home; he’s working his way into my heart. Suddenly, he’s everywhere: shirtless in my garden or in a towel coming out of my bathroom. And my resolve is no match.

Only it’s more than his golden looks. It’s him. The way he watches for my wounds but tells me I’m stronger than anyone he’s ever known. And I can’t help but fall.

But I should’ve known better than to think I could be happy—not when a ghost from my past still has me in his sights. And when he finds me, he’ll do anything to tear my life apart, even if it means ending it for good…

Shep and Thea are absolutely exquisite! When we met Thea in book one, I wanted to desperately know her backstory. She was haunted (clearly for good reason!) and the only man who could help her see the light again was Shep. He won my heart as my top CC hero because he’s everything!! Patient, kind, hardworking, and wants to ensure that those he loves are safe.

Thea is an incredibly strong woman who was backed into a corner. If she’d fought her past as it had happened, I fear that Thea would’ve been quite different. Instead, we get to watch her grow into a woman who loves and more importantly, trusts, with all of her heart. Underneath her layers of personal protection, I love how she is funny, a bit sassy, and not afraid to try new things – food, gardening, etc. For me, I felt like Thea’s greenhouse was her Delicate Escape — it was where she could create new life on her terms.

Shep reads her like a book and instantly wants to protect her while also gaining her trust. For him, it’s part of a path of redemption for not being there for Rhodes and being deceived by Silas while also some for his past. The Colson’s adopted him after he was left by his birth mother in a drop box at a fire station. My heart hurt for how a few others treated him because of that fact. This is a slow burn, but soooooooo worth the wait to discover how giving of a man Shep truly is. The romance novel scene recreation — SWOON! I absolutely LOVED that he gives Thea back so much of what she’d lost without any shame or guilt.

And Lolli — oh how wonderful is she??!! I love her humor and spunky outgoing personality that keeps everyone on their toes. Her antics are the perfect balm to soothe the suspense that this book will have you tied up in!
