When I was in my early teens, I pondered the idea of becoming an investigative journalist. Although that is not the career path I ended up choosing, it’s still something that draws me into characters related in nature. Clare Carlson immediately had my attention as I dove into Broadcast Blues. Clare is tenacious – a quality I find invaluable when it comes to someone who investigates for a living (be it a detective, journalist, etc.).

I love the first person narrative because we get to experience the story through Clare’s eyes. Her character is fully-fleshed, making you feel like you literally stepped into her shoes to investigate through her instead of looking over her shoulder. Clare has a penchant for the truth in her work and is unstoppable once she sets her nose into action for finding that truth. Makes me wish for more like her in today’s world!

Belsky really grabbed my attention by giving us plenty of flaws in Clare’s personal life to make her relatable. We’ve all seen it in the industry – 50 is an age where women start to fade into the background, often replaced by perky younger versions. Clare refuses to accept that her fate is going to be one of those who fades out. She brings to light all the things that the world would like to keep underwraps – crime that encompasses sex and money — and of course, murder — with influential names and reputations.

I wish I had read the first books in the series, but I felt like it was fairly easy to jump into with the characterization being so strong. Perfectly paced and a plot of full of events and detail that keep your eyes open and reading!
